Here is how
you can get family members to "objectify" their responses beyond
the emotional "yuck" or "yum:" First, everyone
takes at least one bite without saying a word but thinks of a ranking
number. Second, go around the table with everyone stating his or her
ranking number. (You average this out for #5 above.) Finally, go
around the table again asking for a one to three word expression (see
prompts on #6 below) that describes why the ranking number was chosen.
Here you are educating children to go beyond "yuck" and
"yum" and give descriptive words to responses to foods. You
never know--one of them might aspire to become a professional food columnist.
